DURBAN TO ESTABLISH DENIS HURLEY CENTRE AT EMMANUEL CATHEDRAL
Durban's Emmanuel Cathedral is to build a Denis Hurley Centre, if permission is granted by the Heritage Council (AMAFA) for the demolition of the run-down and dilapidated 104-year old Parish Centre.
It had been hoped that the Parish Centre which is C-listed in terms of its heritage quality, could be restored, but a thorough feasibility study has shown that that option would be prohibitively expensive, likely to cost more than double the cost of a new building with the same floor area.

The Denis Hurley Centre will provide:

  • A 24/7 outreach to refugees, street people, people living with HIV/AIDS and others in distress
  • Education and skills training for people of all ages, as well as venues for meetings, workshops and conferences in one of the most challenging neighborhoods of the city
  • Facilities for community-building in a highly diverse parish in downtown Durban
  • A resource centre including a library, bookshop, museum, and exhibition space housing collections associated with the life and witness of Archbishop Hurley
  • A coffee shop and catering facilities for a feeding scheme and for meetings and events
All of these facilities will help the Cathedral to be what its name "Emmanuel" suggests: a place where people, especially the poor and marginalised, can have a tangible experience that "God is with" them and that their human dignity is respected and honoured. It will help the Cathedral parish realise a dream of Archbishop Hurley's that the Church should be a "community serving humanity".
