The Denis Hurley Centre relies on paid and unpaid team members to do our work.
In order to keep out costs down and be sustainable as an
organisation, we have a very small complement of paid staff. From time
to time we do recruit and we will advertise vacancies here and also
through emails to our database and through Facebook. Currently there are vacancies for primary health care nurses.
We do NOT
accept speculative applications and we do not keep CV’s on file. If
you want to hear about vacancies, please sign up to our newsletter by
sending your name and location to

Vacancy for Building Manager
We are rightly proud of our building: not only is it an icon of hope and peace in the busy-ness of the CBD, but it has also been very well managed so it looks (almost) as good as when we moved in nearly 10 years ago. Key to this is having an excellent Building Manager and a vacancy has now arisen for this full-time paid post.
Details are attached and applications are now being sought.
We are a complex building with multiple users and lots of elements to co-ordinate. It is rarely quiet or dull! But as our Building Manager you would know that you are making a concrete contribution to the work of the DHC in helping the most marginalised in our community.
Please share with anyone you think has the necessary experience and might be interested.
We are also open to the possibility of a retired person coming in for a 6-month contract to help us up-skill existing staff members.

Unpaid staff
They say that Volunteers do not go
unpaid because they are worthless but instead because they are
priceless! We certainly believe that at the Denis Hurley Centre: we
could not do the work that we do without the incredible generosity of
volunteers.
The main area in which we use volunteers is in our
kitchen – in fact last year our regular and irregular volunteers there
contributed the equivalent of R600,000 worth of labour! Our oldest
regular volunteer is 87 – so you are never too old. At the other end of
the age range, we do not allow unaccompanied volunteers aged below 16;
younger children can only come if accompanied by an adult and by prior
agreement.
Medical Volunteers
We
are always keen to hear from volunteers who are qualified medical
professionals – doctors, nurses, other specialists – and who have some
free time to offer, perhaps because they are retired, or between jobs,
or studying, or on a career break. We can be flexible in how you work
to accommodate your availability. Please contact our Clinic
Co-ordinator
ruth@denishurleycentre.org.
Overseas Volunteers
Because
of the nature of what we do and where we are located we are not well
placed to take overseas volunteers for an extended period. If you are
visiting Durban and want to help in our kitchen for a morning or two,
you are welcome: please contact
cathy@denishurleycentre.org However,
we always interested in overseas medical professionals who want to
volunteer. If you are in the UK, please contact our volunteer
recruitment partner and mention your interest in the Denis Hurley
Centre:
https://twoweeks.org.uk/.
They have sent a number of volunteers here and so can give you a full
insight into the experience. For all other countries, contact us
